Introduction
The National Environment Management: Protected Areas Act No. 57 of 2003 (NEM: PAA) requires that South African National Parks (SANParks) produces management plans for all national parks in consultations with stakeholders. The objective of a management plan is to ensure the protection, conservation and management of the protected area concerned in a manner which is consistent with the objectives of the NEM: PAA and for the purpose it was declared.
SANParks Coordinated Policy Framework
The SANParks Coordinated Policy Framework comprises generic policy statements applicable to all National Parks which informs the contents of the Park Management Plans. Download a copy of the document here.
Framework for Developing and Implementing Management Plans for SANParks
SANParks has created a framework for developing and implementing management plans it practices so that interested members of the public, collaborators as well as employees have an understanding of our management processes, especially Strategic Adaptive Management.

Process for Developing or Revising Park Management Plans
In accordance with NEM: PAA the draft management plans are submitted to the Minister: Environmental Affairs and Tourism, for approval.
Newly proclaimed National Parks:
The procedure detailed above applies to the drafting of Park Management Plans for all new National Parks within one year of proclamation.
Revision of the Golden Gate Highlands, Namaqua, Mapungubwe and West Coast National Parks management plans for the period 2009/2010
SANParks is busy with the revision of the above mentioned management plans.
All Stakeholders are thus invited to register to participate in the revision of the above mentioned management plans.
Golden Gate Highlands National Park
- The Park Management Plan will be available on the website by 16 April 2010 or can be obtained on request from the Park. Written comments are to be forwarded either electronically or by mail to André Spies (tel: (012) 426 5285 or e-mail: andres@sanparks.org) by 27 May 2010.
- Stakeholders are further invited to attend a Public Meeting to comment on and discuss aspects of the plan. A Public Meeting will be held on Thursday 29 April 2010 at the Golden Gate Hotel starting at 10:00.
Mapungubwe National Park
- The Park Management Plan will be available on the website by 05 March 2010 or can be obtained on request from the Park. Written comments are to be forwarded either electronically or by mail to André Spies (tel: (012) 426 5285 or e-mail: andres@sanparks.org) by 16 April 2010.
- Stakeholders are further invited to attend a Public Meeting to comment on and discuss aspects of the plan. A Public Meeting will be held on Thursday 18 March 2010 at the Musina Municipal Offices starting at 11:00.
- Park Management Plan 2010 - 2015
Namaqua National Park
- The Park Management Plan will be available on the website by 12 February 2010 or can be obtained on request from the Park. Written comments are to be forwarded either electronically or by mail to André Spies (tel: (012) 426 5285 or e-mail: andres@sanparks.org) by 26 March 2010.
- Stakeholders are further invited to attend two Public Meetings to comment on and discuss aspects of the plan. The Public Meetings will be held on:
- Wednesday, 24 February 2010 at the Community Hall in Hondeklipbaai starting at 11:00
- Thursday, 25 February 2010 at the Succulent Karoo Centre in Kamieskroon starting at 11:00

West Coast National Park
- The Park Management Plan will be available on the website by 12 March 2010 or can be obtained on request from the Park. Written comments are to be forwarded either electronically or by mail to André Spies (tel: (012) 426 5285 or e-mail: andres@sanparks.org) by 26 April 2010.
- Stakeholders are further invited to attend a Public Meeting to comment on and discuss aspects of the plan. A Public Meeting will be held on Thursday 25 March 2010 at the Multi-Purpose Centre at Langebaan starting at 18:00.
Progress Report: Draft Management Plans developed in 2006
The management plans are currently being revised in accordance with the specifications set by the Minister, and will be posted when the revision process has been completed.
